Honors Program

About the Honors Program

The Honors Program at Moon School of Music is an audition-based initiative designed for advanced and dedicated music students who demonstrate exceptional talent and a deep commitment to their musical craft. This performance-based program focuses on honing students’ skills through an array of solo performances and chamber music activities. The Honors Program aims to cultivate well-rounded musicians who are not only adept performers but also influential figures in the music world.

Age Requirement

Students must be at least 8 years old by January 1, 2025 to apply for the Honors Program.

Commitment

Enrolling in the Honors Program requires a steadfast commitment to musical excellence. Students are expected to dedicate themselves fully to their musical journey, embracing challenges and striving for continuous improvement. A cornerstone of the Honors Program is the participation in exclusive events designed to enrich musical learning and experience. These events are scheduled in advanced, and students must be available to participate in the program.

Honor students are required to attend all lessons and classes, demonstrating consistent progress. Any teacher concerns will be brought to the Honors Program Director, and students may face probation or potential dismissal from the program based on these evaluations.

Scholarship

Students who are accepted into the program are required to commit to a one-hour (minimum) private lesson each week. These lessons are designed to provide intensive, personalized instruction to help students reach their full potential.

Accepted students will be awarded a scholarship covering 50% of the tuition for 60-minute weekly private lessons. All classes including small ensembles, events, and musicianship classes will be fully covered.

Admission Requirements

1. Teacher Nomination: To be considered for the Honors’ Program, students must first be nominated by their music instructor. The nomination highlights the student’s exceptional talent, dedication, and potential growth.

2. Application and Audition: Nominate students will receive an application to apply. Students must complete Honors Program Application which includes a personal essay. Final candidates will participate in an in-person audition, which will be evaluated by our Honors Committee evaluating the student’s technical proficiency, musicality, and overall performance.

*Students must audition each year for the Honors Program and participation in the program for one year does not guarantee a place for the upcoming year.

Musicianship

Ensembles: Honors students are assigned to an ensemble with other students from the program who are studying in a comparable musical style. Ensembles will include chamber groups for classical students and contemporary ensembles for jazz, rock and pop students. Students will meet once a month and must be available at the time agreed upon schedule set by the group and instructor.

Theory: Students are required to enroll in a theory class after taking a placement test. Theory classes will be scheduled based on availability.

Master Class: Master classes will be scheduled in advanced throughout the year, and all students are required to attend and perform in at least one class.

Recitals/Events: Honor students are required to perform in the school’s spring and winter recitals, as well as other special events.

Community: The Honors Program not only cultivates musical excellence but also emphasizes the importance of community engagement and service. Students enrolled in this program are expected to share their talents with the local community through a diverse array of activities throughout the year. Students will have the opportunity to perform at nursing homes, hospitals, local retirement homes, and schools bringing music and joy to diverse audiences.
